4 DIY Detox Drinks
By Holly Darnell, RD
February 27, 2023
Detox drinks are becoming a popular method to help cleanse the body and mind, boost your nutrient load and energy, and so much more.
The detox drinks below, in particular, rely on super greens powder to provide that critical cleaning ingredient. Because this powder can come with a certain taste, it helps to customize these detox drinks with the right type of ingredients that marry well.
Why make a detox drink? We’re exposed to a toxic load every day, including the inside and outside of our bodies. What type of toxins? Environmental pollutants, food chemicals and preservatives, heavy metals, pesticides, pathogens and more. We inhale, ingest or come into contact with these toxins daily.
While we can deal with a certain level of toxin exposure, it makes sense to support our built-in detoxification system. A great way to detox your body then is to start making the below drinks. They can help the body’s natural detoxification system, including the liver, colon, kidneys, lymphatic system and even the skin.
(You can also deploy some of these drinks as part of our Super Greens Detox Program. Of course, you should always consult your healthcare professional prior to beginning any new dietary or lifestyle program, including dietary supplementation, especially if you’re pregnant, nursing, allergic or taking any medication. Note: This program is not intended for children.)
Detox drinks are typically low-calorie, nutrient-filled homemade drinks that often feature fruits, vegetables, water and herbs. Unlike other juicing recipes, these often appear as green drinks because they employ liberal use of super greens powder.
The benefits of detox drinks are significant. When you use our supplement Organic SuperGreens as the powder, the benefits include:
Detoxify — Support your cleaning system (liver, kidneys and immune system) with plenty of nutrients.
Increase nutrient load — The herbs, greens and botanicals in Organic SuperGreens are nutrient-packed sources of essential phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals. It’s also loaded with 25-plus power-packed superfoods containing key plant compounds. You're also get micro-algae like spirulina and chlorella.
Boosts healthy energy levels — When you’re meeting your nutrient needs, such as for key vitamins and minerals, and avoiding inflammatory foods or triggers, you should have more energy.
Support healthy digestion and overall gut health — Our Organic SuperGreens powders include a proprietary, clinically studied probiotic called Bacillus coagulans. The inclusion of probiotics in our greens formulas helps to support absorption of other nutrients and offers many other digestive benefits.
Better adapt to stress and stay in balance — Organic SuperGreens contains the adaptogens ashwagandha, reishi, cordyceps and astragalus. These are superfoods that generally help your body adapt to stress and stay in balance.
Supports cognitive health — Promoting a healthy immune system, a healthy response to inflammation and getting enough sleep all help to fuel healthy cognitive functions and an overall positive outlook. You can keep your outlook, motivation, and focus on track by supporting your gut and obtaining plenty of detoxifying foods and supplements.
There are four so-called green juice recipes below. Each include key ingredients that boast several health benefits. Here are a few of those ingredients:
Ginger: Contains a diverse array of many important compounds, vitamins and minerals — such as gingerol, which has potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Celery: It’s a great water-based vegetable and includes many electrolytes.
Apple: A great source of fiber, particularly pectin that binds to cholesterol in the gastrointestinal tract and can slow glucose absorption.
Coconut water: The primary nutrient in coconut water is potassium and is considered a high electrolyte beverage.
Kale: Kale is a great source of many important nutrients. It’s considered a top source of both vitamin A and K.
Cucumber: They are one of the lowest calorie veggies, yet supply powerful polyphenol compounds.
Spinach: Spinach is rich in many important nutrients, including vitamin K, vitamin A, folate and vitamin C, yet contains a very small amount of spinach calories in each serving.
Lemon: They contain a good amount of fiber and vitamin C, plus they include a few other micronutrients as well.
There are four different detox drink recipes below, each with complementary ingredients. Ideally, you have a juicer to make these more easily. If you don’t, you can also use a power blender and then strain the juice from the mixture.
For each recipe, simply juice the ingredients, then in a small container, large glass or bowl, add in the coconut water and one scoop of the Organic SuperGreens powder.
Mix until combined with a spoon or a frother. Then consume right away or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Juices can last for up to 48 hours.
